Look closely at the strand \/ high tide lines on the beaches around Newquay, and there is a high probability you will see thousands of small plastic pieces.<\/p>

On recent beach cleans we have been using small bags, made from tulle, to remove plastic from the strand line. The bags are ideal for collecting tiny pieces of plastic, which are difficult to remove by hand, through to larger pieces.<\/p>

Analysing what was removed (in those bags) from the last beach clean, I suspect is a good representation of the plastic pollution found in the strand lines of north coast beaches: the variety of small indistinguishable pieces of plastics, cigarette butts, plastic cotton bud sticks, polystyrene pieces, biobeads and nurdles, all in various stages of being broken down.<\/p>

Nurdles (plastic pellets, lentil-shaped, weighing a fraction of a gram and measuring 5mm or less) are the most numerous pollutants.<\/p>

For the plastic pieces, what was the original item they were part of, where did they enter the ocean, how long have they been there or buried in the sand?<\/p>

How did the nurdles end up in the ocean; lost during the manufacturing process, in transit or lost at sea?<\/p>

Efforts need to focus on removing micro plastics from the marine environment, identifying the sources of those plastics and preventing them entering the ocean.<\/p>
